I know that I recommended everyone read this, but I think everyone might be entertained/disturbed by this piece as well, linked from Jesus’ General. I urge everyone to look at the identity of the first poster.
It’s hard for me to get too worked up about:
1. That which strays too far from “What Is.” (Read my past posts for More Info Than You Ever Wanted To Know About My Opinions On This Subject.)
2. Ruminations on a literal hell for people like … oh, I don’t know … Hitler.
Hell does not exist. Period.
How’s that for my own particular brand of fundamentalism?
I agree with Jeff from the standpoint that these folks aren’t worth much intellectual consideration. Y’all know me well enough to know I consider myself a neo-fundamentalist. Hopefully you also know me well enough to realize that this breed of hate (as well as other breeds) is as far from the Gospel I try to follow as it could possibly be. This Bible thing? I actually try to spend time reading it, and I don’t cherry-pick. That’s why its hard work. I don’t understand how anyone that attempts to read the whole thing could possibly embrace this kind of hate and certainty of their own righteousness.
Oh, and I disagree with Jeff about hell.
What happened to the End of Ism?
This is a true story. One of the employees of the convenience store located at the crotch of 29 and that cut-across to Herring Rd. (fresh produce shed next to it) died. I don’t know the illness. This man had no insurance and his family had no money for final arrangements. He was Hindu and had no local religious community to which his family could turn. A local Christian congregation offered to help with the burial and provide a memorial service.
A moment for us all to sigh with contentment.
The church that provided this is pastored by Billy Ball.
When family and friends of the man were seated for the service, Ball delivered a sermon in which he told the gathering of Hindus why thy were going to Hell.
It was an evangelical set-up.
If hell did exist, which it doesn’t, I would hope that people who pull this kind of trick would have reserved seats.
When y’all say “these folks,” are you in fact talking about the blogger and the commenters?

RE: Marc #7 -> That’s horrible. Not sure how I would have handled things were I in the same situation, but I hope at the minimum that 1) I would have offered to help with things and B) I would have offered no condemnation of either living or dead. Off hand, I can recall no situation in which Christ ministered by informing those he spoke with of their likelihood of residency in Hell, which, of course, does exist. As Marc’s comments imply, these knuckle heads came so close to acting like Christians should and missed the mark (no pun actually intended).
So, I gather you’ve read my gospel. Yes, I changed the spelling of my name to dodge the incessant media blitz.
