Little Cabin In The Woods

More to come on this later, but I proposed to certain members at a recent fireside chat the possibility of a Lichtenbergian Retreat. Click here for an example of 642-414 certification the sort of place I had in mind. This particular one doesn’t have the hot tub that Dale requested, but does cover most of the other bases. The idea would be to fill the place with creative materials (drawing/sculpting/writing/dancing/singing/storytelling), food, and drink, and proceed to have a wonderful time creating as much (or in true Lichtenbergian fashion) as little as we like.cisco 640-864

50 Thoughts on “Little Cabin In The Woods

  1. The page your link points to does indeed have a hot tub. I’m in.

  2. In fact, start proposing dates.

  3. I’m in.

  4. Can we do this in the fall? I am 100% on board if we can do this in the fall.

  5. If we’re thinking fall, we’ll need to book NOW. That’s leaf time.

  6. I’ll start. The first three weekends in September are out for me. (That’s 9/5, 9/12, and 9/19: Labor Day, and some kind of celebration of Ginny’s birthday, although I could go ahead and plan one of those and the other could be open.)

  7. Call me boorish, but…strippers?

  8. Forgive me for setting him up. Now Dale will offer something like:

Excellent! I think you’ll be impressed with some of my pole moves.

  9. At least give me a couple of minutes to get the cheap shot in there:

“Thanks, I got that covered. So to speak.”

  10. Okay, now I’m having second thoughts.

  11. I’m trying to have no thoughts.

Some ideas not involving nudity for the retreat:

Someone could bring a vocal piece for us to attempt as a group.

A member could offer an overview of how they approach some activity they enjoy, such as writing, research, composing, painting, games, drawing, whatever.

  13. I for one am not sure why any of those would not involve nudity, viz., the ELP. But that may be just me.

  14. What was the actual question on the floor?

  15. turff on April 15, 2009 at 1:21 pm said:

Ok, so I should have been more explicit. (see what I did there?)

Here are some ideas that DON’T REQUIRE nudity. Nudity optional. (Note to self: verify remoteness of cabin and stock sunscreen)

And it was less a question than an attempt to incite discussion about cool stuff we could do whilst sequestered.

  17. Here’s what I’m thinking:

In Art & Fear, one of the first fable/anecdotes told is of the art professor who divides his pottery students into two groups. The first, he says, will receive their grade based on one perfect piece. They have all semester to produce the one piece. The other group will receive their grade based on sheer bulk: the more pots they make, the better their grade.

The results are of course as predictable as they are truthy: the students who produced tons of crap ended up making better work at the end of the semester than the students who planned and planned and threw one “perfect” pot.

Therefore, I will write and paint with abandon, producing three days worth of utter crap. I may even throw most of it away before we leave.

  18. Restarting the conversation here…

We’re talking a Thursday night through Sunday noon kind of thing, with those joining later who must, yes?

  19. So we’d have a full Friday and Saturday to work/discuss/commune.

I’d have to negotiate for the vacation day that would require, but that’s not the same thing as no. I could easily be a late joiner (but would hate to miss the time with the group).

  21. work: I approve. The American Way.

discuss: a trifle elitist, don’t you think?

commune: Communism doesn’t work. Freedom for the Individual! I can’t condone this.

  22. You might as well have been totally outrageous and included “…/socialize.” Socialism. We know what you’re up to.

  23. Your pitiful knowledge of my schemes affect nothing. I will continue as I have begun.

    Candidate Dates:
    Weekend of 24 October
    Weekend of 14 November

What say ye? As soon as we can reach some consensus, I will arrange for accommodation.

    October, definitely.

October? Again with the Communism! What is this?

October it is, then, under protest.

  27. I have pencilled in October. Are we trying for the Thu/Sun thing?

    Yes, comrade.

I will begin seeking accommodation for the evenings of 22, 23, and 24 October. Guiding principals: plenty of space, remoteness, outdoor fire facilities, nice view. Cost assumptions: so far, I hear Jeff, Dale, Marc, Mike, and myself are good for the date. Early research indicates the big cabins are going for $225/night*3 nights=$675/5=~$125pp. We may do better than this, but I will keep you posted. My thought was to take turns cooking, and BYOB. Comments?

  32. Yay! Lichtenbergian Road Trip!

Wait. Does that mean I’ll never get there?

Well, we’ll need to plan another road trip to visit our comrades on the West Coast, obviously.

  42. I’m with you, Turff. These people’s fantasies are disturbing. I mean, you’ve seen for yourself, after all.

    A couple of updates:
I’ve only just fully reviewed one possible source for a cabin. A couple of issues came up. For October, they require a 4 night rental when including the weekend. For parties over 4, they charge an additional $10/night for each person over 4. I’m checking other providers to see if we can avoid these upcharges. Does anyone have a problem sleeping in twin beds, futons, or fold-outs?

  44. I’ll sleep anywhere. (3…2…1…)

  45. marc on June 25, 2009 at 8:29 am said:

i can bring an air mattress, too.

  46. I hike the Appalachian Trail. I have slept on wooden planks. With rats. In muddy holes in full-on rain. I’ve slept beside drunken sociopaths with guns, ranting on about “talking bears.” Anything this cabin has to offer would be a step up, I would think.

  47. As long as it has a kitchen, a bathroom, a fire pit, and no nosy neighbors, I think we’re OK.

  48. turff on June 25, 2009 at 12:29 pm said:

That makes it significantly easier. Thanks all. Any new names to add to the lists in comments #30 and #35?

  49. Is everyone still in?
