SHA: transgressive inclusivism

Dale Lyles, always a skeptical participant in the Symmetrical Hand Arrangement movement, especially as represented by the verité school of Honea, Whitman, Rauschenberg, et al., struck back by moving in an entirely unexpected direction.  Critics began referring, not always admiringly, to his work as transgressive inclusivism.

Lyles' first TI-SHA

It goes without saying that many found Lyles’ sudden break with tradition shocking, even repugnant.  The inclusion of vegetable matter, even something as symmetrical as a baby carrot, had never been considered by any proponent of SHA.

Some scholars claim to have found paleolithic evidence of such practices, but in recorded history, such éruptions were anathema.

Further examples of Lyles’ bizarre—and some say compelling—work are presented without comment.

9 Thoughts on “SHA: transgressive inclusivism

  1. Inclusivism is repugnant. Lyles’s bit of vegetable matter in that infamous first foray was like a little piece of shit he extruded with a leer onto the whole sublime enterprise of SHA. And make no mistake. He knew it. This was not innovation. Desecration, rather. He has transformed the genetrix into a cloaca.

He, of course, will admit no such thing. In certain conservative circles he has become something of a hero. He’s praised for having tamed the power of the essential Void through an act of Phallic subordination. It suits his nature to support this interpretation.

The whole raison d’etre of the Arrangement is to acquire a healthy presence of mind in the face of that Void, to learn to tolerate the sublime intensity. I wish to experience myself vacillating among numerous anxious responses, yes, including even moments of repugnance, as I sustain the umbilicus of everything within a crystallized, bio-morphic frame. But the repugnance elicited is of a different order entirely. I have no wish to cheer for Lyles’s obscene little plug. What a sad shutting down of the whole enterprise.

  2. While I welcome marc’s (if late) arrival at the party, I can’t let the opportunity pass without a reminder that this is exactly the sort of thing to which his smug dismissal of my concerns for clothing and jewelry in SymHand work leads.

  3. Lyles has dropped a steaming turd in the midst of the cathedral, and Turff can’t get past the sight of a ringed finger. Please. The ring is simply an accoutrement of a life being lived. The pilgrim who approaches the task does not need to mis-represent or dissemble or camouflage who he or she is. The ring in no way interferes with the Conversation Between Presence and Absence which is at the heart of the Arrangements.

  4. Honea’s purported preference for the Void (ahem!) and associated disgust with excrement is surely a concern completely extraneous to the SHA process. It might behoove him rather to explore beyond the boundaries of his own flesh and seek, as a “pilgrim” might, the one-ness of all matter, a Universal Thanksgiving not limited to the scope of his own two hands.

  5. Ah, we’re back to Oneness. The crux of the Great Schism (the Greatest of many, I realize). Simple, powerful plastic dynamism appropriated to illustrate mystic mumbo jumbo. There have been many esoteric substrates attached to SHA; I have no disputes with some of the more complex, nuanced systems that have emerged. SHA certainly can claim it’s share of Kandinskys. But “Two Hands Come Together As One” has never had true weight. Yes, it has its adherents among the “Praying Hands on the mantelpiece” crowd…

  6. Well, there you are.

Inspires me in the same way the Cialis epistle did. We create a constellation of material through a seemingly random Googling and let that guide our work. Psychoanalysis, after all, is just Googling the unconscious.

  7. I am reminded of a Styx song. Appropriate in this instance, since it has “hands” in the title.

  8. Surely Mr. Honea has not retreated to the ingratitude of denigrating Dürer’s staggering contribution to the field?
